Increasing Regional Mobility: METRO RTA and GCRTA Collaborate for Bus Service

METRO Regional Transit Authority (METRO RTA) and Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) have recently announced their collaboration for a new bus service that connects Summit County with GCRTA’s Southgate Transit Center. Premiered on June 5, 2023, the #31 and #32 fixed-route bus services provide a seamless connection to various places in Summit County and create new opportunities for regional mobility. Regional Mobility is important for economic growth, social interaction, and the overall quality of life.  GCRTA teamed up with METRO RTA to provide customers arriving at the Southgate Transit Center with the ability to transfer from one bus authority to another in reaching various destinations between Cleveland and Akron. "This is a huge win for residents of Cuyahoga County who may be looking for access to industrial jobs in Macedonia and Twinsburg, and for Summit County residents looking to access the vast opportunities in GCRTA’s network," said GCRTA Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Floun’say Caver. "The collaboration between GCRTA and Akron METRO RTA provides new mobility opportunities and demonstrates the benefits of regional cooperation."

With a 30-minute service, this collaboration increases access to jobs, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and other essential services. “Providing 30-minute service to GCRTA’s Southgate Transit Center will create new access to jobs and opportunities for our passengers," said Dawn Distler, METRO RTA Chief Executive Officer. "I’m proud that our team continues to think outside of the bus by building connections beyond Summit County, and I thank GCRTA for their continued partnership in creating these connections for our communities.” The 30-minute service will be beneficial for riders who rely on public transportation for their commute to arrive at their destinations safely and in a timely manner. In addition, an increase in bus lines also encourages people to leave their cars at home and switch to more sustainable modes of transport which decrease pollution. This will benefit not only job seekers but also local businesses that depend on access to a skilled workforce.

In addition to employment opportunities, this collaboration will also create greater connectivity between the Akron and Cleveland metropolitan areas. When people can travel easily and efficiently between regions, they are more likely to connect with others outside their immediate community. This can help foster a sense of community and social cohesion, as well as reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness.
