Just like GCRTA’s mission statement states, employees help with “Connecting the Community” by helping to provide a service to customers, helping with crisis situations, hosting special events, and enhancing the safety of riders along with people in the community. Operator Anthony Reed embodied the GCRTA mission statement by taking quick action and potentially saving a life on the night of February 3, 2023. On his scheduled route, Reed noticed a small child with no shoes, no shirt, or pants near the intersection of Detroit Avenue near West 95th Street. Reed secured the bus and then stopped to help the child. After he and the child entered the bus, Reed called for assistance from the local authorities to West Blvd-Cudell Rapid Station. When the authorities arrived, it was determined that the child has autism and is non-verbal.
Reed was commended for his act of compassion and care that was given the child. It was also noted that Mr. Reed may have saved the child's life. Operator Reed received a Champions of Safety award for his commendable act. This award is given to an employee who is recognized for identifying a safety hazard, assisting in the resolution and mitigation of a safety hazard, an employee that assists in incident investigations that aren't a part of everyday activities, or participating in the overall safety effort to reduce collisions, incidents, and injuries.
