CLEVELAND -- The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) has completed a light show installation in time for the Republican National Convention.
WHEN: The summer solstice, June 21, 2016
WHERE: RTA’s Little Italy-University Circle Station, East 119th Street and Mayfield Road
WHY: The station incorporates new lighting technology above the entrance of the station. Programmed LED strip lighting turns on at dusk and off at dawn, and changes each season with a transitional light show.
It is controlled by the computer program monitor that adjusts to the latitude and longitudinal position of the earth in relation to the sun and time of year.
A seasonal transition light sequence is displayed for the two solstices and the two equinoxes that occurs between the four seasons.
The next, pre-programmed, seasonal transition light show will take place on Tuesday at dawn and dusk, and summer season sequence will be yellow, pink and blue.
The light installation marks the final touches to the new station, which was opened in August 2015. The light installation was planned as the crowning touch, in time for the influx of Red Line customers and visitors expected during the Republican National Convention.
How it works
Each season has its own lighting color pallet and sequence. The artist designed the lights to create a sense that the lights are active and alive, capable of changing to all possible colors (red, green, blue and white light color spectrum). The artist’s goal -- create vibrant, moving colors that enhance nightlife ambiance of the Little Italy neighborhood.
