July 31, 2016: RTA riders begin using a new track at Tower City

CLEVELAND -- On July 31, 2016, the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) continues an $8 million project to upgrade the heavily used Track 8 at its busy Tower City Station. It's the first reconstruction since 1990, and work is expected to last until Thanksgiving.

What that means for customers

This project primarily affects Tower City commuters using the Waterfront Line, and the westbound Red Line to Hopkins International Airport.  Those commuters will need to use a newly refurbished Track 7 with accessible platforms, turnstyles and ticketing stations.

Track 7 can be accessed only from a separate entrance on the Public Square level of Tower City between Victoria's Secret and Darrio Fashion Group. New signage will direct riders to the elevator and stairs leading down to the new platforms. Additional signage will mark the new entrances beginning with the start of service July 31.

  • Commuters who are arriving at Tower City from the east will use the newly renovated Track 7 platform and will exit the platform by stair and/or elevator to the Public Square level of Tower City, between Victoria’s Secret and the Dario Fashion Group.
  • Commuters who board the Waterfront Line or the westbound Red Line will also use the newly renovated Track 7, which includes ramps for wheelchair accessibility to board trains.
  • Commuters who are westbound on the Red Line and want to continue through Tower City to points west will not need to exit the train.
  • Commuters who board the Red Line west of Tower City and are headed east will not be affected. Their trains will still enter Tower City as they do now, and they will be dropped off at the same platform.

Signs will be posted around Tower City to direct customers to the new entrance. RTA employees will be on hand to help with the transition. Cleveland.com has also provided a video directing customers to the new platform entrance:
