The Greater Cleveland RTA Commemorates Transit Equity Day

Feb 4, 2025

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) commemorates Transit Equity Day, a national day of action held on Rosa Parks’ Birthday each year to elevate the message that public transit should be safe, sustainable, and equitable for all people and all communities.

Rosa Parks is a Civil Rights icon who on December 1, 1955, bravely refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Her actions sparked the Montgomery bus boycott and the U.S. Supreme Court decision declaring segregation on buses unconstitutional. The actions and legacy of Rosa Parks are intrinsically tied to the concept of transit equity for all.

“Transit Equity Day is the transportation industry’s commitment to fairness in mobility,” said GCRTA General Manager, Chief Executive Officer India L. Birdsong Terry. “As a public agency committed to this change, we must continue to do our part to embrace one another with respect and dignity, across all modes – while ensuring safe transportation options that can be relied upon, every day.”

GCRTA is committed to providing equitable transportation options for all through the creation of innovative mobility solutions. Today, GCRTA is honored to celebrate Ms. Parks for her pivotal role as a powerful advocate for access and equal rights in our nation’s transportation history.
