Bus Bike Racks

All GCRTA buses, except the Healthline buses, are equipped with bike racks in which can accommodate up to 2-3 bikes.  Signal the bus operator before boarding and load your bike on the exterior rack. If the exterior rack is full, please wait for the next scheduled bus. Healthline buses have a designated area in the rear of the bus to store bikes. Bicyclists must remain with their bike at all times.

If a space is not available, please wait for the next scheduled bus. Whether you bike to work, ride the transit system, or combine both; always remember to prioritize safety regardless of your commuting method.

Bike Rack: Preboarding Tips

Always approach the bus from the curb or bus stop, never the street. Wait on the curb with your bike until the bus comes to a complete stop, then make eye contact or signal to the Bus Operator before attempting to load your bike. Secure any loose items and remove any bags/water bottles.

How to Use a Bike Rack:

  1. Squeeze the handle up to release the bike rack.
  2. Lower the bike rack and release the handle.
  3. Lift the bike, fitting the wheels into the proper wheel slots (closest to the Bus Operator).
  4. Pull the support arm out, then pull up and over the bike’s front tire to secure the bike.
  5. Secure the support arm as closely to the fork/fender of the bike rack.
  6. When boarding the bus, please ask the Bus Operator for a Bike Ticket. When exiting the bus, use the front door of the bus and hand the Bike Ticket to the Bus Operator.

Bicyclists and Rail - Riding Together

Bikes are to be stored at the end doors of the rail car only. Bicyclists must remain with their bike at all times. Bikes are to be securely held or tied in place without blocking any aisles or doorways. Rail cars can accommodate 2 bikes.

If space is not available, please wait for the next scheduled rail car. Storage racks are provided at rail stations for riders to lock their bikes.

E-Bike Policy: Bus and Rail

E-Bikes are permitted on GCRTA buses:

  • The E-Bike is 100% electric (carries no fuel).   The E-Bike is too small to fit on a bike rack.
  • The E-Bike must be collapsed or folded.
  • The E-Bike must not block the aisle of the bus.

E-Bikes are permitted on GCRTA rail cars:

  •  The E-Bike or scooter is 100% electric (carries no fuel).
  • The E-Bike or scooter must not block the aisle of the rail car.
  • The E-Bike or scooter must be placed in the area reserved for ADA mobility devices, bikes and strollers. *ADA passengers have priority.

HealthLine

In order to take your bike with you on the HealthLine, it must be carried on board. There is a designated area near the rear of the vehicle where you can store your bike. For safety reasons, you must remain with your bike at all times. If the area is already occupied, then you will have to wait for the next vehicle with available space.

Rail Stations

You may take your bike with you on the Rapid. Please store your bike at the end doors of the train only. You must remain with your bike at all times for safety reasons. RTA also offers convenient storage racks, where you can lock your bike, ride our service, then pick it up when you get back.

An adult must accompany anyone younger than age 18 with bicycles.

  • Walk your bike inside all stations, and on all platforms.
  • Only two bicycles are permitted per rail car, with space available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Bikes are permitted on RTA trains, based on operator discretion. If the train is full, or if space at the end of the car is already taken by customers in wheelchairs, cyclists may be asked to wait for the next train.
  • No tandems, recumbents, mopeds, or tricycles are permitted on RTA vehicles.
  • Bicycles are not allowed on station escalators. Use the stairs and elevators only.
  • Yield to wheelchair passengers.
  • Board the train after other passengers, and stay with your bicycle for the entire ride.
  • Keep aisles and doorways open.
  • Bikes must be securely held or tied in place.
  • On the platform, keep your bicycle away from the edge at all times.
  • Obey posted signs and instructions from authorized personnel, including Transit Police, Service Quality Management, Rail District operating and supervisory personnel and municipal police.

At the Tower City Station

  • Enter and leave by taking the elevator between the station level and Prospect Avenue level (3rd floor), using the Prospect Avenue doors to the left and right of the elevator.
  • Bicycles are prohibited from all other areas of The Avenue at Tower City Center, including stairs, escalators and retail areas.
  • Transfer between Blue, Green, Waterfront and Red Line Trains, using the faregates designated for wheelchairs.

At Cleveland Hopkins International Airport

  • Bicycles may be locked outside in designated areas.
  • For safety reasons, bicycles are not permitted inside terminal buildings.

Bus-Bike Shared Lanes

The GCRTA has a few locations with designated hours for bus-bike shared lanes in which buses and bikes are the only occupants of these shared lanes.

Locations are limited to parts of Euclid Ave., Clifton Blvd. and Superior Ave.

Bicycle Safety Reminders

  • Blind Spots and right turns are the major causes for bus and bike collisions.
  • Look out for bus shelters.
  • Follow the rules of the road (signs, signals). Be predicable, alert and visible.
  • Ride defensively.
  • Use lights at night and in the rain.
  • Always pass on the left.
  • Ride with traffic, not against.

Your safety and the safety of fellow passengers are our top priorities. Let's work together to create a positive and safe experience for everyone using GCRTA and bicycles. Thank you for your cooperation and enjoy your ride!
