CLEVELAND, OH – The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) Main Office Building is being cleaned over the course of the next four weekends to remove asbestos-containing dust, RTA officials announced to employees today.
In an abundance of caution, the Main Office Building will be closed Saturdays and Sundays for cleaning beginning August 21 and continuing each weekend through September 18. Employees who work in the building on weekends are being temporarily relocated.
On June 8, RTA’s Safety Department identified potential asbestos material in the subfloors of certain locations in the building. Upon investigation, six samples of floor underlayment were tested, and three of the samples contained asbestos. Test results from air sampling showed no airborne asbestos. Additionally, 12 wipe samples showed eight locations with no asbestos but four with dust that contained asbestos. RTA received final wipe test results on August 12.
RTA has engaged Chemtron Corpration to design and perform a cleaning process to safely remove existing asbestos-containing dust and to perform follow up testing.
