During the coronavirus pandemic, Cleveland RTA has continually looked for ways to keep our customers and employees safe. Additional safety measures have been taken and enhanced cleaning protocols have been developed in order to disinfect and sanitize high traffic areas and all touchable surfaces.
In early April, RTA purchased the Moonbeam3 disinfection technology, which can sanitize high traffic areas in as little as 90 seconds. Using UV-C light, the Moonbeam3 can clean highly sensitive electronic equipment, so it is ideal for use on computers, electronic repair parts, radios, and even the K-9 vehicles. These are locations where chemical disinfectants might not work as effectively, or at all. You can’t exactly spray the inside of the computer, circuit cards, sensitive signaling components, or areas of live electrical currents with Lysol! This is also helpful for cleaning in the nooks and crannies of offices, bus cabs and hard to reach surfaces.
By using the Moonbeam3, Cleveland RTA can also help sanitize N95 and KN95 masks for employees, both of which have been approved for use by the CDC. These masks can be fully sanitized in 5 minutes on each side. However, it should be noted that cloth is only sanitized on the surface, so the UV-C light cannot penetrate into the fabric of a homemade masks or bus seats. Although, the exterior surface is sanitary.
Moonbeam3 has four settings- 90 seconds, 3 minutes, 5 minutes and 10 minutes. Most viruses can be killed in 90 seconds; however, Cleveland RTA will use the 3 minute setting in most circumstances. This apparatus also has a motion sensor for safety and accelerometers. Cleaning of high traffic areas will be done at off peak hours when customer interaction is low. The process of disinfection is quite quick; however, it still must be done without interruption from staff and customers alike.
The Moonbeam3 is manufactured by Daylight Medical in Middleburg Heights. We have ordered two units, and received one on April 10, 2020. We should receive our second unit in approximately six weeks. The unit is lightweight (approximately 32 lbs) for easy mobility.
